Module 06 · Music in Ads, TV & Film — Sync
Lesson 1
Preparing for Sync Submission
Sync licensing is one of the best ways for artists and producers to make money without being on stage or having a hit. Much of the music in TV, games, ads, and film comes from artists you've never heard of.
To submit, you'll work with a music supervisor or library. Be ready:
- Music registered with a PRO
- Metadata + split sheets ready to send
- Know exactly what you deliver (mood, instrumentation, vibe)
- Decide your payment model: lump sum upfront, or smaller fee + backend royalties
- Study how music is used in your favorite shows, films, ads
- Have files ready: MP3, WAV, track-outs/stems, explicit + clean versions, all mastered
- Keep production interesting — shifts every 4–8 bars create movement
- Be able to describe the mood and feel in words
- Stay on brief — supervisors have specific requirements
