Performance Rights Organizations (PROs)

PROs collect royalties on behalf of songwriters, composers, and publishers. In the U.S. there are three: BMI, ASCAP, and SESAC.

When registering, you'll declare a role:

• Songwriter — writes the lyrics.
• Composer — writes the instrumental.
• Publisher — collects royalties for compositions and can license them for sync.

The PRO you register with as a writer must also be used to create your publishing entity. Creating a publishing entity is required to collect the publisher's share.
